The three-way catalyst is the most important external purification device installed in the exhaust system of automobiles.  It can convert harmful gases such as CO, HC, and NOx emitted from automobile exhaust into harmless carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen through oxidation and reduction. When the three-way catalyst fails, it cannot catalyze the reduction of harmful gases emitted from the exhaust, resulting in increased vehicle exhaust pollution and harming environmental quality.

Ⅳ. How to maintain the three-way catalyst

During the use of the vehicle, it is necessary to pay attention to several situations: first, long-term idle running; second, late ignition time; third, misfire of individual cylinders; fourth, difficulty in starting; fifth, excessively rich mixture; sixth, engine oil burning;  seventh, oxygen sensor failure; eighth, poor heat dissipation resulting in high water temperature.

During vehicle maintenance, it is important to inspect the three-way catalyst. The inspection includes: whether there is any abnormal noise from the exhaust pipe, which is usually caused by loose exhaust pipe joints, damaged three-way catalyst, loose catalyst replacement plugs, etc.; whether there is any visible damage such as cracking or flattened shell of the exhaust pipe; whether there are catalyst particles discharged from the tailpipe. If the three-way catalyst shell is damaged or particles are discharged from the tailpipe, it needs to be replaced.
