How to clean such a severely clogged particle trap? The repairman's method is to put it into a high-temperature oven and bake it at a temperature exceeding 400 degrees Celsius. Only at this high temperature can the particles inside be cleaned, which takes about three hours or more, depending on the blockage situation.

The repairman put the particle trap into the oven and also put the three-way catalyst into it. After baking for more than three hours, the removed state is shown in the following figure.

Due to the proximity of the three-way catalyst to the engine exhaust valve, there is little carbon buildup inside, so its blockage is not severe. On the other hand, the particle trap is located further away from the engine exhaust valve and operates at low temperatures, making it easy for particulate matter to accumulate. Even after high-temperature baking, the amount of particulate matter cleared is limited.

As shown in the figure below, there are no black particles on the surface of the baked particle trap, but there are still many inside that need to be cleaned.
